In addition to paid employment, we have a number of wonderful volunteer opportunities! Some of our current opportunities include: Activities Leader, Administrative Assistance, Bus Driver, Dog Walker, Meal Server, Medical Appointment Escort, and Musical Entertainer.

Volunteer Luncheon - June 11, 2012

On Monday, June 11, 2012, Cathedral Square will be holding its 2nd Annual Volunteer Luncheon.

Our volunteers will be treated to a full spread, including healthy sandwiches, yummy desserts and door prizes.  We will also take this opportunity to highlight our shining stars; some of whom have put in 65 hours per month of volunteer work!  We couldn't do it without them!

Volunteer Activities May 2012

Volunteer Opportunity Date:  5-6 hours in early May (one-time event / flexible date)
Site:  Cathedral Square Senior Living, Three Cathedral Square, Burlington
On-Site Supervisor:  Kristi Lyon
Description:  Group of 4-6 volunteers to rake, prune, clean garden beds and clean outdoor furniture.  Coffee and doughnuts provided.
Requirements:  Ability to lift and haul lawn and garden debris.

Volunteer Opportunity Date:  2-4 hours in late May, (one-time event / flexible date)
Site:  Richmond Terrace, 220 Thompson Road, Richmond
On-Site Supervisor:  Jean Kelly
Description:  Group of 4-6 volunteers to clean eight raised gardens and possibly helping people with planting.
Requirements:  Ability to life and haul lawn and garden debris

Volunteer Opportunity Date:  8 hours in late May-early June (one-time event / flexible date)
Site:  Holy Cross, 468 Church Road, Colchester
On-Site Supervisor:  Cheryl Rose
Description:  Group of 8-10 volunteers willing to spend the entire day weatherproofing gazebo, chair swing, benches, and other outdoor furniture.
Requirements:  Ability to paint and stain outdoor furniture.

On-Going Volunteer Opportunities

Position Title:  Activity Leader, Cathedral Square Assisted Living
Summary:  Lead an activity with seniors living in our Assisted Living Residence.  Read the newspaper, a novel, or poetry; perform manicures; lead an arts and crafts activity, or a sing-a-long; play a game.  Activity leaders can use their own strengths and skills to develop their own ideas which will help our residents continue to live a healthy, active life.
Qualifications:  Must be able to work independently with large and small groups and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.  Hours:  30–60 minutes per week/month depending on activity and schedule.

Position Title:  CSSL Bus Driver, Various CSC Communities
Summary:  Using a 14-passenger bus, transport Cathedral Square residents to and from the grocery store weekly and other events and activities as needed.  Assist residents in and out of bus when needed.
Qualifications:  Valid Vermont driver’s license and clean driving record.  Must be comfortable driving and operating a 14-passenger bus with a chair lift.  Hours:  2–3 hours per week, plus additional hours as needed for special events and activities.

Position Title:  Dog Walker, Various CSC Communities
Summary:  Help a senior walk their dog during inclement weather. It is difficult for our residents to walk their dogs after a big snow storm or with ice on the ground. Spend 30-60 minutes exercising yourself and your new furry friend.
Qualifications:  Must love dogs!  Hours:  30–60 minutes per week/month depending on need.

Position Title:  Meal Server, Cathedral Square Assisted Living and Ruggles House
Summary:  Serve meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner to Assisted Living and Ruggles House residents.  Help set and clear tables as needed. 
Qualifications:  Must be able to work independently and lift 15 lbs.  Hours: 1 hour per shift seven days a week.

Position Title:  Medical Appointment Escort, Cathedral Square Assisted Living
Summary:  Accompany an Assisted Living resident to and from medical appointments and brings back all necessary paperwork to the Assisted Living Nursing Staff.
Qualifications:  Must be able to push a wheelchair, have good communication skills, patience and judgment; have some experience with older adults and be comfortable with those with physical or cognitive impairments.  Hours:  Up to 3 hours per trip.

Position Title:  Leading Others to Health, Richmond Terrace
Summary: Richmond Terrace is looking for an energetic and personable person to develop and lead an exercise/walking program twice a month at their community.  We have a beautiful area to walk around and enjoy the outdoors.
Qualifications:  Some experience in working with seniors.  The ability to sculpt the program around the participants.

Position Title:  Keeping Minds Sharp, Richmond Terrace
Summary:  Seeking someone who would like to take a few hours per month to develop and run a book club/journal article club.  Share current events and discussion group depending on the participant's interests.
Qualifications:  Willing to be flexible with different kinds of reading material to fit the group.

Position Title:  The Weather's Fine / Let's Get Out and Move!, Richmond Terrace
Summary:  Richmond Terrace would love to have someone who is willing to come in every other week, or once a month to lead a low-impact exercise or walking hour.  Now that summer is here, it would be great to get people outside.  Be creative with your program and come have some fun!!
Qualifications:  Must be comfortable working on your own and working with seniors.

Position Title:  Are you up for some ESP?  Escort/Shopping/Partners
Summary:  We have some wonderful residents at Grand Way Commons that would benefit from having a partner on a weekly, monthly or as needed basis to escort them to medical appointments, help with grocery shopping or just running some errands.  This can be either in your own vehicle or accompanying them on SSTA or in a cab.
Qualifications: Length of time will vary as needed.  Could be as little as one hour per month or once a week as you desire.

Position Title:  Sharp Computer Minds Needed
Summary:  Looking for an individual or group who would be willing to come and help our residents learn how to use the Wii.  After some instruction, then you could help set up some tournaments, possibly between communities.  We want this to be light and fun for our residents.  Also, looking for someone to do short time tutorials on different Microsoft Office programs.
Qualifications:  Must be proficient on computers and gaming programs.  Enjoys working with people, patient and kind.

Position Title:  Driver, Heineberg Senior Housing
Summary:  Looking for energetic driver to pick up participants at their private residences in Burlington and drive them to and from Heineberg Senior Housing on Tuesdays and Fridays for Tai Chi class at 10-11 am.  Volunteer is encouraged to participate in Tai Chi class!
Qualifications:  Valid Vermont driver’s license, clean driving record and a safe, reliable vehicle.

Position Title:  Driver, Burlington
Summary:  Looking for a volunteer who would like to develop a long-term relationship.  Volunteer would pick up resident at their private residence in Burlington and drive them to and from church on Saturday afternoons.
Qualifications:  Valid Vermont driver’s license, clean driving record and a safe, reliable vehicle.
