In late 2023, the Town of Highgate asked nonprofit developer Cathedral Square to develop affordable housing for older adults in Highgate as part of the Town’s Village Revitalization project. After years of working together, Cathedral Square and the Town of Highgate have made the difficult decision not to move forward with the proposed 30-unit Highgate Village Housing project, after determining that a public water system to serve the development is not feasible. This unfortunate outcome illustrates the challenges that rural communities in Vermont are facing.
Cathedral Square was honored last week at Efficiency Vermont’s Better Building by Design conference?, where Reid Commons in St. Albans took home a Best of the Best Performance Excellence Award for Residential New Construction in the Multifamily Homes category. The annual conference draws design professionals, construction leaders, and climate workforce experts from across the region. Duncan Wisniewski Architecture, ReArch Construction, Engineering Services of Vermont, Green Mountain Enclosure Consulting, and Evernorth Energy Services were partners on the project.
This week Cathedral Square celebrated the official grand opening of Reid Commons, bringing 33 new energy-efficient, affordable apartments for adults 55 and older to St. Albans. Federal, state, and local officials gathered with community members to celebrate the momentous occasion, over a decade in the works. Located at 17 Lower Newton Street, Reid Commons offers one- and two-bedroom apartments with a range of rents to serve a mixed-income community. Amenities include a lounge, community room with kitchen, telehealth room, gym, elevators, laundry room, covered and surface parking, courtyard, and garden beds.
This week, the Hinesburg community celebrated the official grand opening of Kelley’s Field II. Co-owners and co-developers, Evernorth and Cathedral Square are pleased to welcome adults 55 and older to the 24 new permanently affordable apartments in Hinesburg, Vermont. Situated next to Kelley’s Field I, Kelley’s Field II is the second phase in the larger Kelley’s Field development project, offering 24 energy-efficient apartments – 23 one-bedrooms and 1 two-bedroom apartment with a mix of affordable and market-rate rents.
Cathedral Square’s Bayview Crossing in South Hero received Efficiency Vermont’s Best of the Best Award for Residential New Construction in the Multifamily Large Projects category at the Better Building by Design conference. Efficiency Vermont’s annual event brings together design professionals, leaders in building construction, and experts in climate workforce trades. Weimann Lamphere Architects designed the project and ReArch Company was the construction manager. Both firms accompanied Cathedral Square staff in receiving the award.
Cathedral Square intends to be part of the solution to ending homelessness in Vermont and is pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative – the Housing Incentive Program (HIP). HIP is aimed at supporting new residents exiting homelessness to be successfully housed over the long term. The pilot will leverage all the existing layers of services available in a Cathedral Square community, including the award-winning SASH® model, with the added component of tiered financial incentives spaced out over five years for participation in a flexible menu of additional support and education options.

The building is being constructed to Efficiency Vermont’s “High Performance” standard for energy efficiency, and rents include heat, air conditioning, electricity, hot water, and laundry.
Cathedral Square’s Bayview Crossing community in South Hero received a Welcome to the Neighborhood Award at Vermont Housing & Conservation Board’s 35th anniversary celebration earlier this month. The award was presented to Cathedral Square, Champlain Islanders Developing Essential Resources (CIDER), and the Town of South Hero for “your extraordinary dedication over many years to develop housing in the Lake Champlain Islands."
